Can dogs eat salmon?
Yes, if it is a small portion of boneless salmon cooked all the way through, without seasoning. Do not feed raw salmon. Remove very fatty skin, and call a clinic if the fish was raw, bony, or followed by weakness or fever.
Portion and preparation
A small portion of boneless, fully cooked salmon without seasoning. Remove skin if it is very fatty; do not feed raw salmon. Measure any allowed portion in teaspoons or grams, and keep treats near ten percent of daily calories rather than a full cup, about 180 g.
Why this matters chemically
Fully cooked, boneless salmon has no identified toxin for dogs or cats. Raw Pacific salmon can carry a fluke in some regions, and bones plus onion seasoning are separate risks to avoid. Keep the package where pets cannot reach it.
What clinical signs can appear?
Signs vary with the amount eaten, the animal's weight in pounds (kilograms), and how much time has passed. The list below is what clinics commonly ask about. It is not a checklist that rules disease in or out for one animal.
- Vomiting after a fatty portion
- Fever, vomiting, and enlarged nodes days after raw salmon in endemic areas
What if this was eaten?
Call a clinic if the salmon was raw, still had bones, or the dog becomes weak or feverish. Cooked boneless salmon does not need decontamination; save details if it was raw or smoked with seasoning. Bring the package and the pet's weight in pounds (kilograms) when you call.
Which agencies regulate this advice?

The VMD licenses veterinary medicines in the United Kingdom, where DEFRA also sets animal-health rules, and the APVMA registers veterinary chemical products in Australia.
